Our Team

Mary Hill, President

I spent all my high school and university years saying I would never live in Pembroke or work in the family insurance business. But in 1972, I started working at Johnston & Mackie and was paid $1.15/hour – the minimum wage back then.

I discovered that I really loved working in the business, and eventually found my niche in running a small business. I love the variety, and that I learn something new pretty much every day. I also appreciate living in the Ottawa Valley, something that resonates with many of our clients.

As a resident of Petawawa, I share my home with a Cairn Terrier puppy named Rosie. She rules my life with an iron paw! And, every now and then I can sneak away and pursue my travel habit.

Thank you for visiting us virtually.

Carolyn O’Hara, Broker

I am the youngest of three girls who were all raised on our family farm at Mink Lake, near Eganville. I attended Opeongo High School, and then pursued Business & Travel at Seneca College in Toronto. I moved back to Pembroke in May 1989, and everything seemed to happen all at once!

I started working with Johnston & Mackie four months after moving to Pembroke, and after one year, I decided to pursue my licensing to become a Registered Insurance Broker. My specialization is in Personal Lines insurance and office administration.

1989 was also when I met my husband, Jim. We have a home in the rural part of Pembroke that is presided over by a very spoiled pure-bred Ragdoll cat named Sully. I am an avid reader and scrapbooker.

Tara Neville, Broker

I was born in Ottawa, but moved to Pembroke when I was eight years old, as my parents were originally from here. I attended University of Ottawa for two years in the Communications program before joining PriceWaterhouse and working in their data analysis division of the management consulting company.

I have been married to my husband, Scott, since 1991. I am a mother of three children, and a grandmother of one. I stayed at home with the kids until the oldest was 12 years old, and found that I wanted to go back into the workforce. I started at Johnston & Mackie part-time, and enjoyed the work so much, I decided to pursue the business as full-time employment.

In 2005, I became a licensed broker and it has been quite a ride ever since! I feel fortunate to be able to have found a line of work that I truly love, and that allows me to be a part of the lives of so many really great people.

Kelly Simon, Broker

I was born and raised in Pembroke and attended Algonquin College in Ottawa, pursuing the insurance broker program. I started my insurance work with Economical Mutual Insurance Company, a company we represent here at Johnston & Mackie.

After 18 years at the company level, I moved back to Pembroke and moved into a brokerage role with Johnston & Mackie. It has been a really great opportunity for me to become more involved with my hometown, and work in a more personable part of the industry.

My husband, Allan, and I have one daughter, Kate. Away from work, you can find me at Round Lake where my family has a cottage, or traveling the globe with my sister.

Kathy Kenney, Broker

Since 1976, I have represented the village of Beachburg, here at the Johnston & Mackie office!

Although I was born in Pembroke, I was raised in Beachburg and have stayed there ever since. My husband, Doug, and I have a farm where we raised three children, and where we now enjoy our two grandchildren.

My passion apart from work is being involved with the community. I am an active volunteer with the annual Beachburg Fair and our Church’s Sunday School program. Community involvement is a priority in my life. It is always nice when you find a company that is aligned with the same personal values that you have. It’s even nicer when you get to work with that company for as long as I have.

Donna Roggie, Broker

I was born and raised in Pembroke, but, like many people, decided to leave for the “big city” after high school. I worked in Ottawa for the Department of Agriculture for a few years and then realized that my hometown had more to offer than I thought in high school. So, I moved back to the area.

I worked on contract with the Renfrew County Board of Education for a while, but in 1973, I was offered a full-time position with Johnston & Mackie, and I’ve been here ever since.

Today, I have two children and five grandchildren and an "over-healthy" cat named Oliver. In the summer, I love spending time in the many outdoor activities available to this area. In the winter, you’ll find me in a little hut with a heater and a hole in the ice for fishing. Despite my attraction to water, I’m not a Pisces!"

Ashley Hartwig, Broker

I am the youngest of three children and grew up in the Golden Lake and Eganville area. After completing high school, I worked at a local grocery store, and also at a bank as I tried to figure out what career path I would like to pursue. During that time I met my husband, Chad, and we have been married since 2004.

After our first few years of marriage, I decided that I would like to go back to school. I attended Algonquin College at the Pembroke campus and pursued Office Administration. I completed my studies in August and started two weeks later with Johnston & Mackie. Shortly thereafter, I became a licensed broker and it has been a whirlwind ever since!

Chad and I live in Eganville, and in the summer months, you’ll find us outdoors as much as possible. In the winter, we’re cuddled up on the couch with popcorn and a movie. We enjoy being active in our church and spending a lot of our spare time with family. In March 2011, we welcomed our beautiful daughter, Orianna, and I am currently on maternity leave!

Andrea Haskin, Broker

I was born and raised in Madawaska and moved to Pembroke when I was 13 years old. After high school, I worked in Customer Service for four years, which was great training for a position with Johnston & Mackie. I joined the team here in May 2009 and started my career.

In January 2010, I became a licensed Insurance Broker, specializing in personal insurance. I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive and friendly environment than what is provided here. I love my co-workers and look forward to coming into work every day.

For days when I am forced to be away from work, I enjoy spending time with my fiancé Derek, and my young niece and nephew. My hobbies are fishing, boating and camping in the summer, as well as knitting and reading.

Michelle Ward, Broker

I was raised in Ottawa where I met my husband of 19 years. After spending 11 years in Toronto, and pursuing a career in finance and corporate accounts, I came "home" to the Valley. My husband and I and our three wonderful children made our home in Whitewater Region.

After achieving a business diploma in 2010 from Algonquin College, I found my calling with Johnston & Mackie. As someone who is both a people person and detail oriented, Johnston & Mackie gives me the opportunity to do both.

I am also a dedicated hockey fan. In the winter you will almost always find me at a rink for one of my son’s games, or cheering on our Canadian Champion, Pembroke Lumber Kings.

Natasha Godin, Receptionist

I grew up in Pembroke with my parents and three siblings, and have lived in Pembroke my entire life, except for two years when I continued my education at Fanshawe College in London. I received my diploma in Fashion Merchandising, and returned to Algonquin College in Pembroke to take a business program. I started with Johnston & Mackie as a summer student, and haven’t left yet!

Aside from work, I love animals, sports and fashion. Living in a rural part of Pembroke allows me to have a few animals. Keisha, King and Ace are my three German Shepherds who share their lives with two cats (Dirty Face and Cuddly) and two adopted guinea pigs (Guinness and Peanut.) With my love of animals, I also volunteer with the Ontario SPCA Petawawa branch. I enjoy hockey in the winter and soccer in the summer. In between, I also sew, mostly dresses, for myself and relatives.

Having grown up with a Mom who operates a small decorating business, it is nice to work in another local small business where people share the same values that I grew up appreciating.
